The Efficacy of Three Types of Disinfectants on the Microbial Flora from the Surface of Impression Materials Used in Dentistry—In Vitro Study

During impressions, bacteria, viruses, and fungi remain on the impression material, representing a significant risk for medical team (dentists, dental assistants, laboratory technicians). Impression disinfectants have been introduced into dentistry to reduce of cross-infection. This study was performed by examining surface disinfection five commonly used materials in prosthodontics: alginate-Tropicalgin (Zhermack®), condensation silicone-Zetaplus Oranwash L (Zhermack®); addition silicone-Elite HD + Putty Soft Elite Light Body (Zhermack®) after with three disinfectants: Zeta 3 7 Spray Solution (Zhermack®). Before disinfection, were contaminated Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Pseudomonas aeruginosa 27853, Candida albicans 10213. Our results demonstrate efficacy two examined specific reducing cross-infection risk. The disinfectant-spray is not adequate disinfection. A high number bacterial colonies found all impressions disinfected this spray. immersion-disinfection method effectively eliminates cross-infections (Kruskal–Wallis test showed p < 0.001).
